Luuk Balkenende

PhD Candidate

Luuk Balkenende is researching deep learning methods to optimize the magnetic resonance imaging protocol for breast cancer screening to the needs of the individual patient. By performing early detection within this protocol, the time spent by women in the scanner can be drastically decreased, and consequently, more women can be screened with MRI. Especially for women at elevated risk for breast cancer, MRI screening is expected to increase the chance of finding breast cancer earlier. This research is partially conducted in the Breast Imaging Group of the RadboudUMC led by Ritse Mann, and partially in the AI for Oncology group of the Netherlands Cancer Institute led by Jonas Teuwen. Luuk joined this project, funded by the KWF, as a PhD Candidate in mid-2021.
