The Breast Imaging Group (BIG) is an international expertise center focused on advancing breast cancer care through innovation in medical imaging. Our research spans the full clinical spectrum — from risk stratification and early detection to cancer staging, image-guided intervention, and monitoring response to treatment.

We develop and evaluate new breast imaging technologies, including advanced MRI, contrast-enhanced mammography, and ultrasound techniques. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is integrated into all stages of research, supporting tasks such as automated diagnosis, image synthesis, and personalized follow-up strategies. A key focus is on translating data-driven solutions into clinical tools that improve outcomes and workflow efficiency.

Our studies include multicenter reader studies, longitudinal screening trials, and the development of explainable AI models to support clinical decision-making. BIG works in close collaboration with national screening programs, academic hospitals, and industry partners. The group is embedded within the Department of Medical Imaging at Radboud University Medical Center and contributes to the research themes “Cancer” and “Advanced Imaging.” Funding is provided by the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF), NWO, the EU Horizon programs, and international innovation consortia.
