People of BIG

Merle van Leeuwen
Merle graduated from Leiden University in 2017 with a master’s degree in biomedical Sciences.
She is currently engaged in scientific research in Jelle Wesseling's group in the Molecular Pathology Department of the Netherlands Cancer Institute, and Ritse Mann's Breast Imaging Group (BIG) in RadboudUMC. Her research focuses on distinguishing high-risk from low-risk breast calcifications in order to avoid unnecessary referrals of screen-detected calcifications. To achieve this, a dataset of extracted image features, clinical and chemical data will be created. Both statistical and machine learning models will be used to build an understanding of the patterns that exist in how the medical images link to the clinical data.
